About ToolSite

Accurate roof framing calculations, grounded in the same standards your building inspector uses.

Why We Built This Calculator

Roof rafter layout is one of the few construction tasks where a small math error gets repeated across every single member in the building. Get the birdsmouth depth wrong by half an inch on your layout rafter and you've got 18 miscut boards before anyone notices. We built this tool so that anyone — from a journeyman framer to a first-time DIYer building a backyard shed — can verify their numbers before picking up a saw.

The calculator implements the Pythagorean theorem for rafter length, trigonometric functions for pitch angle and birdsmouth geometry, and enforces the HAP (Height Above Plate) requirements from IRC Section R802. It deducts ridge board thickness correctly — something a surprising number of online tools skip. Every output has been verified against span tables published by the American Wood Council and cross-referenced with Fine Homebuilding's rafter layout documentation.

Built on Real Standards

Every formula references a specific code section or industry publication — IRC R802, AWC WFCM, or Fine Homebuilding guides. We don't approximate. If the IRC says HAP must be 2/3 of rafter depth, the calculator enforces exactly that.

No Signup, No Paywall

Contractors and DIY builders both need accurate numbers fast. We don't gate the calculator behind an account, email capture, or subscription. Enter your dimensions, get your results.

Verified Calculations

Our rafter outputs have been tested against hand calculations for dozens of building configurations — from a 12-foot wide shed at 4/12 pitch to a 36-foot house at 10/12. Results match to within 1/16 inch.

Editorial Process

Before any formula goes live, we trace it back to its source standard, verify the edge cases (steep pitches, thick ridge boards, wide overhangs), and test against known-good hand calculations. Errors get fixed within 24 hours of being reported.

What This Calculator Covers (and Doesn't)

This tool calculates common rafters for simple gable and shed roofs with a single ridge board. It handles standard residential pitches (2/12 through 12/12), ridge board deduction, eave overhangs, birdsmouth layout, HAP verification, and rafter count.

It does not calculate hip rafters, valley rafters, jack rafters, or complex multi-ridge assemblies. It doesn't replace an engineered drawing or substitute for a structural engineer's review when one is required by your jurisdiction. For spans over 30 feet or loads outside typical residential parameters, consult a licensed structural engineer.
